Peace Prayer Attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, abandoned his life of luxury and turned willingly to a life of poverty in order to devote himself to the Church. He received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ– the first person to have such holy wounds. Many people followed Saint Francis and listened to his sermons because of His radical charism and Christ-like embrace of poverty. These followers are known as the Franciscan friars.

Are you interested in learning more about the man who went from worshipping wealth and status to dedicating his life to God?

The Avila Institute offers a course titled Introduction to Saint Francis of Assisi. It includes an overview of the life and message of Saint Francis and introduces students to the principal themes of his spirituality. Students earn about the many Franciscan saints who have impacted the Church over the past 800 years and how the charism of Saint Francis informs the Church today.
