Among Avila Texts, Bible and Catechism Rank First

Bible and Catechism Rank First!

Ranking first among the texts we use for courses at the Avila Institute are two books that every Catholic should not only own but should know very well: the Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church. All our professors understand these to be indispensable for spiritual formation and growing closer to God.

As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states, “The Church ‘forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ,’ by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. ‘Ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.’” (CCC 133)

One of our professors, Deacon Sebastian Carnazzo, says this about Sacred Scripture: “This is the most important book you will ever read. If God wrote a book don’t you think you ought to read it? What could be more important than the book written by God?”

Regarding the Catechism, Those who don’t read the Catechism, particularly on the topic of prayer and our relationship with God, are missing a rich and accessible text that is both profound and beautiful, so much so, it is worthy of use in our meditation and spiritual reading.

Courses at the Avila Institute help students dive deeper into the mysteries of God’s written Word in Scripture and the treasures that lay within the Catechism of the Catholic Church, leading students into a deeper union with the Triune God who fills our every longing and desire.
