Broken? – Stanza VII – Part I

For when our human strength prevails,
pride and self-reliance grow.
e then forget that we are creatures,
whom to God, due worship owe.

I cannot think of a better example of the first two lines of this stanza than what is happening today with the government of the USA! As I write this (June 2012), the first amendment right to freedom of religion is being trampled into the ground in favor of what is erroneously being called “reproductive rights” and “women’s health care”. We can be legally charged with a hate crime for disagreeing with someone who is in favor of same sex marriage. Moms who choose to stay at home and raise their kids, often sacrificing many niceties in favor of providing the care and stability that only a mom can give, are being verbally assaulted, insulted, and described as “never working”. This last part in particular leaves me stunned! For years women have fought this battle against men who don’t appreciate what it takes to get through a day while taking care of children. Now the evil one has sisters attacking sisters.

One of my favorite priests says, “It is entirely possible to be educated unto imbecility.” As a country we have lost wisdom. Just because we can do a thing, does not mean we should. The preoccupation with “reproductive rights” and same-sex marriage issues is a prime example of how we run amuck (to behave in an uncontrolled and often violent way), when we think for ourselves.

This is very simple – if you want to prevent unwanted pregnancies, do not engage in the behavior that causes pregnancy! Abstinence is 100% SAFE and effective!! I find it mind-boggling that in a country founded upon the principles of Christianity, because they work for the ‘common good’ , we actually have leaders of our nation who would rather “…shut down the government than defund Planned Parenthood!” (Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid) But it’s true!

Don’t be so open minded that your brains fall out!

The bottom line is that this is about sex, and people who want to have as much of it as possible, whenever they want, with whom they want (including children), without having to worry about ‘complications’ and responsibility for the ‘consequences’ (read babies), of their actions! This is the work of the devil!

My heart gets heavy just thinking about things like this. And because it seems that a steady progression of ‘even worse’ things are coming to light every day, it’s a great temptation to swear mightily and jump into the fray! It might help to do a little yelling and screaming of my own….but not for long.

As I sit here writing this, I am surprised and delighted to realize how deeply I understand that rather than rant and rave, I need to pray, because prayer is truly the only helpful or hopeful recourse I have. Thank you, Jesus! I feel kind of like a spectator sometimes as I watch, read, or hear the news, and observe how even in the past six years things have gotten much worse….and, as much as I’d like to, I can’t do a thing to stop it!! It is truly like watching from a distance, seeing that the bridge over a ravine is out and a train is coming.

Control is an illusion!! This is perfectly stated in Psalm 146: 3-4.

Put no trust in princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help.
Take away their breath, they return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing.

Although we may not like it, we can’t deny the truth of this. We really have no control. Don’t believe it? Try holding your breath – for about an hour.

Science cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, yet the proof of His existence is all around us if we are willing to see it. The ‘orderliness’ of everything in the universe did not happen by accident, or by some sort of natural progression. In Ben Stein’s movie “Expelled”, there is a discussion with evolutionists about where the first living cell came from. Rather than believing that there could be an intelligent designer or creator,  they propose that the first living cell on earth either piggy-backed on a crystal or was seeded by aliens. Truly!Talk about a leap of faith!! (Where did the aliens come from?)

Some friends and I were recently discussing physics or metaphysics (Please forgive my ignorance and lack of correct terminology), and the fact that scientists say that we should be able to put our finger through a wooden table, or anything else for that matter, because matter, broken into its smallest particles, is not held together by anything. There is nothing, like links in a chain or nuts and bolts, that holds things together, nothing…..except God!

God literally holds us in existence. No! It’s not too good to be true….it’s so good it must be true. He loves us into being, and holds us in existence every moment of our lives!!

In a world that demands proof for just about everything, and where very few people can actually tell you what they DO believe in, it is normal to have doubts. Jesus knew this and He understands. We have the example of “Doubting Thomas” who, after having heard from the other apostles that Jesus was alive, told them,

Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)

The next time Jesus visited them the first thing He did after blessing them all with His peace, was to rid Thomas of his doubt.

“Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”(John 20:27)

We must learn to bring our doubts to Jesus. If we do this in honesty and sincerity, just like Thomas, He will provide what we need to free us from our doubt and give us His peace.

About Becky Ward

Becky is a wife, mother of four (One in heaven), grandmother of five, and a "re-formed Catholic" who, after receiving the gift of a deep conversion in 2006, and working through the Disciples of Jesus and Mary faith formation program, now considers herself to be "fully Catholic" What this means is that she now, at last, understands and appreciates the beauty of the Catholic faith in such a way that she wants to share it with everyone. "I've heard that the Blessed Mother told a visionary, 'If Catholics really lived their faith, the whole world would be Catholic.' I see the truth in this, and it is my deepest hope to be a living example that draws others to Jesus. Given the nickname Rebel-Becca by her mother, Becky strongly identifies with St. John the Baptist and his call to "make straight the path of the Lord", and with his role as "Friend of the Bridegroom". The poem, "Broken?" written through her hand, is a reflection of the journey of the soul, and Becky explains what the Holy Spirit is teaching her as she writes posts for each stanza.
