    In the Catholic Church, priests/bishops dispense the Sacraments. Outside of these Sacral responsibilities, the people of the Church look to them to be outstanding advocates for Jesus in whatever other duties they have, wherever they find themselves. For a long time I’ve heard “Well, priests are human too.” True, but they have been set apart, sanctified, and if they want to continue to serve their people, who view them as heroes, out-front models of truth and morality, they must be humble and valiant, not smug and self-centered.

    A Prayer for Priests
    Keep them, I pray, dearest Lord, keep them, for they are Yours,
    Your priests whose lives burn out before your consecration shrine.
    Keep them, for they are in the world, though from the world apart;
    When earthly pleasures tempt, allure, shelter them in Your heart.
    Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain,
    When all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain.
    Keep them, and O remember, Lord, they have no one but You,
    Yet they have only human hearts with human frailty.
    Keep them as spotless as the Host that daily they caress;
    Their every thought and word and deed, deign dearest Lord, to bless
    – Imprimatur – + D. Card. Dougherty, Arch. of Philadelphia

    Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for them.

    When I see a priest, I expect to see-and hear-something about Jesus God Almighty. If the guy doesn’t FIRST mention the Name of Jesus and His Person, before he talks about the Church, parish programs, Gospels, St. Paul, etc., I consider him another functionary who is doing what he has to in order to stay current, a “great guy,” in his parish. These guys-priests-have to realize that they represent Jesus, must talk about Jesus and His teachings, FLAT OUT. Bishops included.
