Description: Today Dan and Melissa answer your questions about sharing spiritual experiences and focusing the mind in prayer.Sharing Spiritual Experiences - DI Radio Show and Podcast

Topics/Questions covered in the show:

  • Why do we share our spiritual experiences on the air?
  • Why did St. Teresa of Avila mask her personal experiences and make it seem as though they were happening to someone else?
  • Why do some well-meaning Christians imply that we think too much during prayer?
  • Should we “empty our minds” in prayer?
  • How do we avoid distractions in prayer?

Valerie — Many people listen to these podcasts. Not everyone comments and we really do love to receive comments. It helps us in what we do. Thank you and God bless you abundantly!

  • Lisa Bowden

Dan, I really appreciate that you share the way you have incorporated the wisdom of the saints and the Church into your daily life. It helps me to get a better handle of how to do it myself. Don’t stop! 🙂

  • Amy

Thank you, Dan, for sharing about being melancholic with emotions going everywhere. I’m sure you’ve mentioned it before, but it’s very helpful to simply hear that I’m not crazy as the enemy would like me to believe. Where can I go to learn more about how you keep this in reign?

    • Dan Burke

Dear Amy, one of the most powerful aids to this challenge is the practice of discernment of spirits and the examen prayer (of course coupled with the normal means for spiritual health in the sacraments etc). I would pick up Fr. Timothy Gallagher has the best book on the topic entitled Discernment of Spirits. I also teach a course at the Avila Institute on the same topic. Regardless, stay away from pseudo answers like those offered by so called “Catholic Mindfulness”

      • Amy Fenner

Thank you – it’s on deck for spiritual reading. You also mentioned briefly a particular way that you utilize the examen – could you share more specifically on that?

        • Dan Burke

Amy – this is a bit complex for a combox. I will put it in the schedule for a discussion on the radio.

          • Amy Fenner

Fair enough. I look forward to that program. Thank you!

          • Amy

In both reading the book and listening to Fr Gallagher’s podcasts, it’s mentioned that the desolation spoken of in rule 4 is not that of the dark night. Are there additional rules (you’ve spoken of 2 other sets) that apply, then, during the dark nights?
