Even unto Death
A Music Video Meditation

Even when we are so busy at the hard work of reforming our souls and “working out our salvation with fear and trembling”, we must never forget the very basic fact about Christianity: God loves us. And it is this love that invites our souls into a deeper love and affection for him. This is the context by which we do all that we do. We rejoice, we suffer, we work, we hope and we pray in the light of this reality. God loves us from first to last – it was love that made us and it is that vision of Love that propels us onward toward our final moment in this life.

He loves us – “even unto death.”

Jesus
The very thought of You
It fills my heart with love
Jesus
You burn like wildfire
And I am overcome

Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

Jesus
You are my only hope
And You my prize shall be
Jesus
You are my glory now
And in eternity

Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

In my darkest hour
In humiliation
I will wait for You
I am not forsaken
Though I lose my life
Though my breath be taken
I will wait for You
I am not forsaken

One thing I desire, To see You in Your beauty

You are my delight, You are my glory

You my sacrifice, Your love is all consuming
You are my delight, You are my glory
You are my glory
You are my glory

You’re the lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
You’re the lover of my soul

Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

This music video meditation is provided courtesy of Audrey Assad, “the daughter of a Syrian refugee, an author, speaker, producer, and critically lauded songwriter and musician. She releases music she calls ‘soundtracks for prayer’ on the label Fortunate Fall Records, which she co-owns with her husband. She is also one-half of the pop band LEVV, whose debut EP peaked at #17 on the iTunes Alternative chart.”

As she indicates on her website audreyassad.com, “Even Unto Death … was co-written with Matt Maher after Audrey heard of yet another martyrdom in the Middle East. ‘I thought of the many martyrs around the world, but especially those in the Middle East, and wondered to myself what would be running through my head if I knew my life was about to be taken because of my faith,’ Audrey explains. ‘And so I began to write the song that became Even Unto Death, praying for the martyrs and hoping for even a shred of their courage. That’s something I would want to sing about on Sundays.”

Beautiful! What a joy to hear the emotion in her voice as she expresses a ‘heart on fire’ for the love of God!

What a beautiful way to follow my prayer and reading this morning, from the LOH, which, perhaps, coincidently, focused on the martyrdom of Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, and which brought to mind the martyrdom currently happening, with ISIS and other groups. Not coincidentally, but providentially, as is my habit after prayer, I come to spiritualdirection.com, and I see this beautiful video, which brought me to tears. I can only pray that I would have the grace and courage, should my faith in Christ ever be tested in this way. Thank you Audrey, and Charlie, for presenting such a beautiful imprint on my heart, and one that I will be replaying throughout my day.

This musical meditation was just beautiful, not only because of Audrey’s sweet voice quality, the moving lyrics, the well matched natural scenery, the tone and message of love/death, and general interest holding qualities, but also because of the sublime ring of hope from a Syrian refugee family. Thank you for this refreshing, meaningful, and lovely surprise today.
