Broken? – Stanza VII – Part I

November 2, 2012 by

For when our human strength prevails,
pride and self-reliance grow.
e then forget that we are creatures,
whom to God, due worship owe.

I cannot think of a better example of the first two lines of this stanza than what is happening today with the government of the USA! As I write this (June 2012), the first amendment right to freedom of religion is being trampled into the ground in favor of what is erroneously being called “reproductive rights” and “women’s health care”. We can be legally charged with a hate crime for disagreeing with someone who is in favor of same sex marriage. Moms who choose to stay at home and raise their kids, often sacrificing many niceties in favor of providing the care and stability that only a mom can give, are being verbally assaulted, insulted, and described as “never working”. This last part in particular leaves me stunned! For years women have fought this battle against men who don’t appreciate what it takes to get through a day while taking care of children. Now the evil one has sisters attacking sisters.

One of my favorite priests says, “It is entirely possible to be educated unto imbecility.” As a country we have lost wisdom. Just because we can do a thing, does not mean we should. The preoccupation with “reproductive rights” and same-sex marriage issues is a prime example of how we run amuck (to behave in an uncontrolled and often violent way), when we think for ourselves.

This is very simple – if you want to prevent unwanted pregnancies, do not engage in the behavior that causes pregnancy! Abstinence is 100% SAFE and effective!! I find it mind-boggling that in a country founded upon the principles of Christianity, because they work for the ‘common good’ , we actually have leaders of our nation who would rather “…shut down the government than defund Planned Parenthood!” (Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid) But it’s true!

Don’t be so open minded that your brains fall out!

The bottom line is that this is about sex, and people who want to have as much of it as possible, whenever they want, with whom they want (including children), without having to worry about ‘complications’ and responsibility for the ‘consequences’ (read babies), of their actions! This is the work of the devil!

My heart gets heavy just thinking about things like this. And because it seems that a steady progression of ‘even worse’ things are coming to light every day, it’s a great temptation to swear mightily and jump into the fray! It might help to do a little yelling and screaming of my own….but not for long.

As I sit here writing this, I am surprised and delighted to realize how deeply I understand that rather than rant and rave, I need to pray, because prayer is truly the only helpful or hopeful recourse I have. Thank you, Jesus! I feel kind of like a spectator sometimes as I watch, read, or hear the news, and observe how even in the past six years things have gotten much worse….and, as much as I’d like to, I can’t do a thing to stop it!! It is truly like watching from a distance, seeing that the bridge over a ravine is out and a train is coming.

Control is an illusion!! This is perfectly stated in Psalm 146: 3-4.

Put no trust in princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help.
Take away their breath, they return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing.

Although we may not like it, we can’t deny the truth of this. We really have no control. Don’t believe it? Try holding your breath – for about an hour.

Science cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, yet the proof of His existence is all around us if we are willing to see it. The ‘orderliness’ of everything in the universe did not happen by accident, or by some sort of natural progression. In Ben Stein’s movie “Expelled”, there is a discussion with evolutionists about where the first living cell came from. Rather than believing that there could be an intelligent designer or creator,  they propose that the first living cell on earth either piggy-backed on a crystal or was seeded by aliens. Truly!Talk about a leap of faith!! (Where did the aliens come from?)

Some friends and I were recently discussing physics or metaphysics (Please forgive my ignorance and lack of correct terminology), and the fact that scientists say that we should be able to put our finger through a wooden table, or anything else for that matter, because matter, broken into its smallest particles, is not held together by anything. There is nothing, like links in a chain or nuts and bolts, that holds things together, nothing…..except God!

God literally holds us in existence. No! It’s not too good to be true….it’s so good it must be true. He loves us into being, and holds us in existence every moment of our lives!!

In a world that demands proof for just about everything, and where very few people can actually tell you what they DO believe in, it is normal to have doubts. Jesus knew this and He understands. We have the example of “Doubting Thomas” who, after having heard from the other apostles that Jesus was alive, told them,

Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)

The next time Jesus visited them the first thing He did after blessing them all with His peace, was to rid Thomas of his doubt.

“Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”(John 20:27)

We must learn to bring our doubts to Jesus. If we do this in honesty and sincerity, just like Thomas, He will provide what we need to free us from our doubt and give us His peace.

Love & Prayers,

About Becky Ward

Becky is a wife, mother of four (One in heaven), grandmother of five, and a "re-formed Catholic" who, after receiving the gift of a deep conversion in 2006, and working through the Disciples of Jesus and Mary faith formation program, now considers herself to be "fully Catholic" What this means is that she now, at last, understands and appreciates the beauty of the Catholic faith in such a way that she wants to share it with everyone. "I've heard that the Blessed Mother told a visionary, 'If Catholics really lived their faith, the whole world would be Catholic.' I see the truth in this, and it is my deepest hope to be a living example that draws others to Jesus. Given the nickname Rebel-Becca by her mother, Becky strongly identifies with St. John the Baptist and his call to "make straight the path of the Lord", and with his role as "Friend of the Bridegroom". The poem, "Broken?" written through her hand, is a reflection of the journey of the soul, and Becky explains what the Holy Spirit is teaching her as she writes posts for each stanza.

Not every Catholic agrees with you, Becky. You believe in a conservative Jesus, and many don’t, a Jesus created by the course of centuries by MEN seeking political and economic power. Your article suggests that you are stuck in a hierarchical, misogynist, and patriarchal vortex, which you call “the church.”
I agree with you about your appraisal of being broken and not in control; only God is in control, ultimately. This article could have been written better without all of the judgment and skewed moral theology.

    • Charlie500

woe, Chris, oh my goodness, the judgment you express here is way worse than any I can find in Becky’s post. Jesus is neither conservative or liberal. Jesus is Jesus, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. As Jesus said, his kingdom is not of this world. He left us with his Church as light and guide rooted in his gospel, and promised to be with the Church till the end of time. (And the gate of Hades will not prevail)…which means that the Church would be persecuted, attacked, infiltrated with imposters, and accused as he was, but the Church already has victory in Jesus. Human beings within the Church may fail and fall, but the moral guidance of the Church is sound. Prayer, Scripture, Sacraments, love of God and love of others… this is the armor we were given to fortify our hearts from the false philosophy of the world. The false philosophy of the culture has reconstructed the image of man and woman according to human ideas and not according to the Creator of men and women. We have lost a true knowledge of ourselves. Pray for the light of Christ. Life according to God’s plan is not a power struggle between men and women but about our complementarity. I would recommend for you John Paul II’s Theology of the Body that explains male and female according to the God’s plan that is based wholly on the word of God. It is so very beautiful and I think it is the remedy for these times of such tremendous confusion. We need to rediscover our identity as Creatures, men and women, made in the image and likeness of God. God bless you for speaking on this topic. I will pray for you, there is a reason why you are here.

Becky, this was a beautiful post . Thank you.
Just today at mass I was thinking, how should I get this people who are Christians and who wanted Obama to be relected for whatever reason, that he is for abortion which is so wrong!! Then a thought struck me and I thank God for it. How about I just pray for whoever comes to power in any country, even if it’s Obama that they have change of heart and do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. I felt at peace with that, and I realized our one true church always does that. Also it hurts me when people say the RC church is wrong because of some priests or religious or laity , I wonder if someone in my family does wrong , do I break away from my family or still stay with them and pray for them?

        • Becky Ward

Great idea!! I actually used to pray a lot for all the world leaders to actively seek peace according to God’s plan. I need to start doing this again….thanks for the reminder! 🙂

      • LizEst

Charlie – Please see my two posts above where I explain in greater detail. Chris is a member of the “Old Catholic Church”. It is a PROTESTANT denomination, which is not in communion with Rome at all. They hold many views that are not in line with true Catholicism. They’ve been around for a while but many are just hearing about them and think they are Catholic. They are not. They are Protestant.

    • Becky Ward

Dear Chris, I used to be infected with the radical feminist nonsense until the Lord showed me TRUTH…..which is Jesus…..once we possess the Truth…it doesn’t matter how many Catholics agree with us…..or not…..we know what is true and we stand on a firm foundation.

Things are received according to the mode of the receiver. Thus, two people can read, see, or hear the same exact thing, yet have totally different responses or reactions. Seems like this post either hit a nerve with you or you misunderstood my point.

For the record, I believe in Jesus as God has chosen to manifest Him to the world through sacred scripture, sacred tradition, and the magisterial teachings of the Church. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching. ” (Hebrews 13:8-9a)

Hi Becky, I totally agree with you. I have through my conversion(4years now) experienced growing in Truth with the help of Holy Spirit. Once you receive the gift of conversion and cherish it with total obedience to God the Giver, you are aware of all semi-truths around you, even in Church itself, and it just feels bad when something is not right or not as Jesus and the Church teaches.

        • Becky Ward

    • LizEst

Chris – I note you are a member of the Protestant “Old Catholic Church” ( This Protestant Old Catholic Church IS NOT A PART OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Please don’t try to confuse people and stir up controversy here.

For the education of readers, there are many so-called churches that use the title Catholic and are absolutely not Catholic. “The Old Catholic Church” is not, in any way, part of the Roman Catholic Church. Old Catholics come from the Union of Utrecht, now part of the Anglican communion, a member of the World Council of Churches…of which the Roman Catholic Church is NOT a member. The Old Catholic Church, of which Chris is a member, rejects the infallibility of the Pope and and a number of other doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church.

Chris, you are welcome here. But please, as a courtesy, do not try to pass yourself off as a Roman Catholic. Thanks…and God bless you. Happy Lord’s Day!

    • Rick7De

      Dear Sir,

The point you make is logically flawed. ‘To be deep in history is to cease to be protestant’. Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman. A faithful Catholic is member of the mystical body of Christ and is communion with the pope and the magisterium. The pope is the vicar of Christ. Being part of the mystical body protects a Catholic from creating a Jesus that is a personal projection, a Jesus that is adapted to our personal weaknesses and to conform with our opinions. Jesus is not a man-made conservative or whatever Jesus, he is the eternal Jesus that does not change. The author Becky does defend any thesis that is not in line with Catholic tradition and the eternal Jesus. The position of the Roman Catholic church on sexuality will never change because truth never changes.

    • Wow!! I have just landed here to find this from you, Chris. You certainly do not belong to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.  If you did, you would know that She has preserved, protected and proclaimed God’s Truth revealed to us by Jesus Christ these 2,000+ years; The Truth She shall so protect and proclaim until the End of Time. This is the Catholic Church which Jesus Christ Himself founded and handed over to St. Peter as Her First Pope  and his future Successors up to our current Pope Benedict XVI.  Any other Sect or Denomination calling itself “Catholic” is something else and certainly not part of the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ.

  • Charlie500

You expressed this well Becky. When I look at how people are starkly turning away from God’s commandments and the moral truth of the gospel en masse, hopelessness sometimes creeps its way in. I get a fearful sense that people ‘en masse’ are losing a grip on sanity. The words in Gaudium et Spes 36 say, when God is forgotten, the creature itself grows unintelligible. In moments of weakness and anxiety, I find that I am questioning my own sanity and asking myself, “Is it me who is illogical? But then films like Ben Steins assure me that I have not lost my grip. When Richard Dawkins in that film concedes to there being an intelligent design to the cosmos and speaks about the possibility of highly intelligent aliens seeding our form of life on earth, I am reassured that my faculties are sound. When I begin to fear for the collapse of logic and reason, I go back to prayer to hear the words “Be still and know that I am God.” Everything seems out of control but God is ‘in control.’ You are right we cannot put our hope in any man or any political regime to save us from ourselves. We have a Savior and His name is Jesus, above every name, power, or dominion on earth. Proof of God IS everywhere, but people have eyes but cannot see and ears that cannot hear. That is our mission to bring light to those who wish to see.
By the way …anyone who has not seen EXPELLED, NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED can watch it now on youtube

    • Becky Ward

Thank you Charlie! – “Be still and know that I am God.”..this is one of my favortie verses too. And thank you for the link to “Expelled”. I didn’t knnow it was on YouTube.
      God Bless!

  • ThirstforTruth

Now we have Catholicism according to Chris Courtrightcox! Sounds like a post-
modernist to me …the kind that has infected the Church from top to bottom …and
they are *everywhere* on Catholic blogs spreading their form of the “good news”.
Really did not expect here where Church orthodoxy reigns. Beware readers!

    • LizEst

asydwy – Please see my post below.

A little research reveals that Chris is a member of the “Old Catholic Church”, which is A PROTESTANT DENOMINATION, not Roman Catholic. They use the name Catholic but don’t believe in a number of things that true Catholics do including papal infallibility. They are not in communion with Rome. There are a number of denominations that use “Catholic” in their names but are not truly Catholic, such as Catholic Womenpriests, etc. So, we must alert to such…though, I can’t understand why anyone would want to claim Catholic as part of their name if they don’t believe what the Catholic Church believes and teaches. So, they aren’t even unorthodox Catholics, they are not Catholics at all. God bless you! Thanks for sounding the note!

      • Becky Ward

Interesting comment!! I read and article some time back that posed the question, “Why don’t Catholics who disagree with Church teaching just join a different religion?”  It can’t be that hard to find something that fits one’s beliefs.

  • LizEst

Thanks Becky. Excellent post. I love that quote, “It is entirely possible to be educated unto imbecility.” Our colleges and universities are breeding grounds of immoral education in deed…and thought. Very dangerous. God bless you. Happy Lord’s Day!

Thank you Becky! A few months ago we had the pleasure of Mr Hugh Owen visiting our shores (Sydney, Australia) and opening our minds to the truth of evolution and the “imbeciles” who have been successful in peddling the entire farce. I felt so ripped off after having gone to Catholic schools all my life and only almost in my 40s coming to know that the “theory” is so loose and contradictory that one cannot help but laugh (or cry). Mr Owen (correctly) states that evolution is a hypothesis – that is, an attempt to explain the phenomena of evolution. Notwithstanding the many flaws and outright lies with evolution, so MANY in our circle have refused to enlighten us with the Truth of this falsity thereby complicating the genesis of our existence. Consequently, this affects other teaching which we are supposed to hold true. A theory is the result of testing a hypothesis and developing an explanation that is taken to be true about a phenomena. A theory replaces the hypothesis. Can we say this about evolution? No.
Holy Father has pronounced the year of faith – part of that would entail giving a fair platform to creationism to reduce the distortion of evolution.

  • Thank you, Becky for this Post.  This Sentence sets my old mind at peace as I reflect on what it means and is telling this rickety, muddling heart of mine.

“We must learn to bring our doubts to Jesus. If we do this in honesty and sincerity, just like Thomas, He will provide what we need to free us from our doubt and give us His peace”

  • To say that stay-at-home moms “don’t work” is narrow-minded at best and
show that those who disseminate this lie know nothing about what it takes to raise a
family! I know how hard stay-at-home moms work on a daily basis! I was a stay-at-home dad for several years myself!

    • LizEst

Thanks for that, Mark. There is nothing like experiential knowledge to broaden one’s perspective. Your kids are so blessed to know you in a way that many do not know their fathers.

  • Jeanne Borrman

Thank you Becky for best expressing so much of what I feel. I know I can do nothing but pray. I know God can do all things! I pray The God of Our Creation, Our Universe, All Life, do all that is possible in restoring the United States of America, and yes, the Whole World.
