Prayer Primer: Igniting a Fire Within – by Thomas DuBay

Prayer Primer: Igniting a Fire Within is a must read for those looking either to begin, or to deepen their prayer lives. Father Dubay, with brevity and clarity, covers all the foundational elements of each type of prayer (vocal, liturgical, mental, contemplative, etc.). For those already experienced with vocal or liturgical prayer, this book will help you evaluate your prayer life and determine how to further develop your relationship with God. For those who already have a solid understanding of meditation and contemplation (within the context of the definitions provided by the Church and the spiritual doctors of the Church), you might look to “Fire Within” instead (also by Fr. Dubay). However, even with experience in these areas, this book will equip you with the perspective you need to evaluate your prayer life in each important area and to navigate deeper waters as you grow in grace.

Regardless of who you are, if you are beginning or reigniting your prayer quest – this book should be the first book you pick up. Click here to learn more.

  • Fr. Dubay is an amazing teacher in things to do with prayer. I’ve read this and loved it. Thanks and God bless.

Oh! I love this book. I just got it and read it from cover to cover! I have owned “The Fire Within” for decades and not gotten into it but this book is accessible and addresses so many practical things like finding time for prayer, family prayer, and prayer for children. It was easy to read and I saw easily where I could made some concrete improvements now. I am going to have my teenaged girls read this as well. I wish I had read it as a teen or college student.

Angela, *Prayer Primer* and *Seeking Spiritual Direction* completely opened up *Fire Within* for me. Try reading it again!

Very good book. My spiritual director has started me out by reading this book. He also told me that anything written by this author is very good.

God will guide you on your journey. if you follow your heart…. pray from your heart, mean what you say… and try to honor the Lord..  seek and you shall find knock and the door will be opened to you…. tell God the truth… He already knows… ,,, it is surprizing when you read these books and how God has already lead you to a deeper love and prayer with Him. with out knowing anything …just loving Him

    • I agree with one caveat – follow your heart in as much as it is formed to Christ and the magisterium. In our culture, “follow your heart” usually means to follow whatever base impulse catches your fancy… Thanks for your enthusiasm Judeen!

What is the difference between the two books.  I read Fire Within and devoured it.  It answered so many questions that I had about my own spiritual experiences that I had no words for and it actually made me feel like I was not a freak because of those experiences.

    • The Primer is a review of all traditional prayer forms. The Fire Within is about contemplative prayer which is only covered briefly in the Prayer Primer.
