Spiritual Warfare & Screwtape Letters:
What the Devil Doesn't Want You to Hear

With Halloween just around the corner you might be turning your attention to thoughts of spiritual warfare and those dark realities of our fallen world and the spiritual realm. If you have never read the Screwtape Letters, there is no better time. I suspect you will be surprised at how relevant it is to your own spiritual life. Here's a taste of what you will find… Before you push play, make sure you have your sound turned up – even better with headphones. You are about to get a behind the scenes look into the brilliant work of a good friend on this classic work on the topic of spiritual warfare.

If the name Andy Serkis doesn't ring a bell, he was the voice of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies. Just in case you are unfamiliar with the book itself, it is a humorous and evil correspondence between the a senior demon known as Screwtape, and his apprentice Wormwood, whose assignment is to deliver a particular human's soul to hell. If this sounds interesting and you would like to purchase the book, just click here. However, you might find this audio dramatization produced by Paul McCusker and featuring Andy Serkis even more interesting. As you can see, Andy's portrayal of Screwtape is absolutely chilling.

Please forward this post on to your friends!

I tried to order the book but Circle Press wouldn’t let me go beyond the “order” page; eg there was no “next” button.

This is awesome, can’t wait to get this. I hope you will consider doing more of this type of radio drama. This will be a great resourse for our homeschooling curriculum. Thank you so much and God bless.

Both the book and the audio version are AWESOME!! I see a new young writer who uses this kind of idea in “The Loser Letters” or something similar. It seems to appeal to the younger generation(s). 🙂

Wow! Andy Serkis really brings out the cunning and horrible character of the Evil One! I was getting goosebumps while I listened to this! Well done!!

There is also a theatrical production of the Screwtape Letters which has been touring the country for the past year. I saw it on the one day in played in Raleigh, NC and it was wonderful. I highly recommend it if it comes to a city near you. http://www.screwtapeonstage.com/about

Agree with Teresa. That production is EXCELLENT.

  • I just read most but not all of Screwtape Letters. The book begins with quotes saying that the devil can’t stand to be mocked right? Well this is highly amusing! I had a nightmare after reading the book! But the dream ended well because I prayed the Saint Michael prayer out loud. But really all because I read the book? Gotta laugh at that! :))

It is sometimes confusing to sort out which is causing me to stumble: the world, the flesh, or the devil. I picture him glancing at me from time to time, reassuring himself that I’m making a mess of it all by myself. I do sense his presence in what i call “times of great graces,” or times of consolations. It’s as if God lets me be aware of the real enemy of my soul when I can take it.
It is said that CSLewis had such a hard time keeping the twisted point of view in this novel that he became greatly depressed.
    No wonder…
It is a very powerful tool for us to recognize the bottom line. ie, when the world and the flesh aren’t working to bring us down, the devil himself will show up. Frequent communion and confession and prayer from the church militant and triumphant are essentials. Pope John Paul II says :”Be not afraid!”
